Secret and Clues
Sister Maria is Doreen’s daughter. Both are Green Hags (Menagerie page 268)
Sister Maria doesn’t know she’s a green hag. Doreen’s been letting her enjoy the village until the day they all die and all of their souls feed into her.
Sister Maria is getting powered up by the living souls of the village. The obelisk beneath the village channels this energy.
Two obelisks remain. If both are secured by the high priest of the Black Harbinger, he’ll be able to open the gateway to Thanatos – realm of Orcus – and pour undead out into the world.
Doreen worships a twisted deity He Who Swims in the Darkness.
Doreen found an obelisk down in the depths below the village. She channels energy into it to pull on the souls of the people above. She’s done so for three generations. Through it she parlays with He Who Swims in the Darkness.
She hopes to find the Black Cathedral and use its door to enter a different world.
He Who Swims hates the Black Harbinger and the Eater of Worlds.
He Who Swims seeks an artifact lost in the depths of Valintin’s Folly and has sent agents to recover it.
This unhallowed dark elven amulet, an artifact of a drow who broke away from Lolth to the voice of He Who Swims, is known as Eye Between Worlds can act as a key to connect the Black Cathedral to the primeval jungle and roiling ocean realm known as the Gaping Maw.
The obelisks and the Black Cathedral were built by a massive number of cultists known as the Followers of the Eye.
The Followers of the Eye hoped to use the Black Cathedral to open a door to the prison of their diety – a diety trapped by other gods many millenia ago.
Maria has been in contact with another follower of He Who Swims – a villager in Dulwich who has conducted many blessed murders in the name of He Who Swims.
Thousands of years ago, an order known as the Order of the White Sun cast out an elder evil of tremendous, an being whose very name is cast out. A cult known as the Cult of the Eye built the Black Cathedral and its Obelisks to channel the being’s energy and open a doorway to its prison.
The Cult of the Black Harbinger has battled the bandits who once held Valentin’s Folly. They seek one of the obelisks and a key to open the doorway of the Black Cathedral.
